There are many ways for everyone to help out the local community.
Brenda Wells found a way for her children to learn that helping others can
make a person feel good about themselves.
"I was reading the Premiere online while I was filling out birthday
invitations and I saw that the food pantry was needing items," Brenda
said.
After reading that, she called the boys in to ask what they thought
about having the guests bring food instead of presents. The boys
enthusiastically thought the idea was great. On the invitations, Brenda
asked the guests to bring a donated non-perishable item instead of gifts.
"The parents thought it was a great idea," Brenda said.
Brenda feels that with all of the family that the boys have, they
receive enough presents and this way, along with the food pantry, they are
helping the City Pool by having a pool party at the cost of $50.
"This is the first time that we have done this," Brenda commented. "The
boys have enough toys and by the time that family gives them gifts, they
have more than enough. We bought each of the boys a Nintendo DS and Austin
got a 4-wheeler for his birthday."
Dakota would like to challenge everyone to do this same thing for the
rest of the year.
"We give to other people who don’t have enough food to eat," 8-year-old
Blake said. "I want to keep doing this."
Brenda is planning on having two more parties in the month of August,
one for Dakota’s birthday and another for Wiley’s birthday.
"Eunice Winter, the boys’ grandmother, was excited to see the children
donating to the food pantry," Brenda said. "She works with the Lutheran
Church and their food pantry."
If enough families in our community donate a canned item the food bank
will have enough food to support the families in need of temporary
assistance. To donate to the food bank, contact the United Methodist
Church, 108 E. 2
